Quranic verses & hadith to support
According to Islamic perspective, this issue of zero hunger can be linked to one of the Quran's passages that states that we must not have "wasting habits" since it reveals how awful that mentality is, akin to Satan's. The rules set down by Allah S.W.T in Surah Al-Isra' verse 27 of the Quran Karim were also followed in this case.
(26&27: Surah Al-Isra)
Translation; Give to close relatives their due, as well as the poor and ˹needy˺ travellers. And do not spend wastefully.Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.
In this verse Allah explained, both Satan and those who squander do not fulfil their duty of appreciating God’s favours, which means that they should use it only in purposes that earn God’s pleasure, doing His bidding and refraining from anything He has forbidden.
This verse is reflected for those who are practicing wastefulness which is definitely forbidden by him. To be clear, we as Muslim are not supposed to practice this way in our life because there are many needy that deserved it than us. Thus planning our meals is being compulsory in efforts to reduce waste. Over spending and eating goes against from what our beloved prophet, Nabi Muhammad practiced in his daily life.
From Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) said, “When one of you eats, he must lick his fingers (after finishing), for he does not know in which of them lies blessing” (Sahih al Muslim, Jami Tirmidhi) to show us not to let go of any part of our food. To add to that, Sayyidina Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said; “When one of you eats his meal and a morsel falls, he must pick it up and remove the doubtful portion and eat the rest. He must not leave it for the devil.”(Jami’ Tirmidhi).
In addition, from the view of Maqasid Al-Shariah, the food could be categorized in Daruriyyat level which is an absolute necessity to stay alive. However, it would turn to another level of necessity which are Hajiyyat and Tahsiniyyat if we practice taking excessive food. Although it could bring mafsadah which is harmful for certain contexts.
As conclusion, basically as muslim we should live in Wasatiyyah (modesty) and plan our meal as well as we could to prevent from be wasted. Besides, we need to take care about the environmental effects by taking attention to the management of food waste.
Therefore, we have come to the end. We hope this zero-food waste project we have conducted to our iium community will contribute to the ongoing efforts to prevent food waste. It's also hoped that the poster and video we shared on social media can instil and foster the importance of preventing food waste and motivate us to lessen our food waste. As we know, food waste is a huge problem. In fact, tonnes of edible food are lost or wasted everyday not only in the iium community but also worldwide.
There are endless ways to prevent food waste. but to note that, even with a small amount of effort everyone puts in to combat the food waste, it will not only benefit the students but also the environment, economy as well as our country. It helps to achieve sustainable development goal 12 which is to ensure the sustainable consumption and production patterns. But this will have no effect unless the students take part in it. So, in short everyone should take part in practicing to reduce food waste.
